1911 Vought Disc form
An early effort at
disc-shaped design, the 'umbrella plane' of inventor Chance Vought.
Aviation has advanced not only on its successes, but by learning from
its failures.
Whatever
this design's merits may be, they lie more in the quantity of fabric
and the quality of the joinery than in any sound application of
aerodynamic principles.
The aircraft, as far as we know, went nowhere; but Vought himself went
on to produce a famous line of aircraft in the U.S.A.
