civil aviation disasters
The term
"jumbo jet" was coined the 1970s. The Boeing 747, later followed by the
McDonnell-Douglas DC-10 and the Lockheed L-1011 ushered in a new era of
air travel. As with the previous generation of jet transports, safety
levels were unparalleled. However, the potential for catastrophe was
again raised, a crash in 1974 killing nearly twice as many people as any
previous accident.
